D. C. Cook Nuclear Power Station - Bridgman, MI American Electric Power (AEP)

Project Description: Units 1 & 2 Turbine Controls DC_CookReplacement Projects (Main Turbines (MT), East (EFPT) and West (WFPT) Feed Pump Turbines). The turbines’ existing electro-hydraulic control (EHC) systems were replaced by new digital control systems and new EHC systems. New electrical equipment was installed to support the new systems: 4.16kV-600V transformers, two 600V SWGR lineups (250Vdc breaker control circuitry), 600V MCCs, 120Vac power/control distribution system, UPS systems, protective relaying. Services Provided On-site consulting and project engineering responsibilities and activities included but were not limited to:

  • Interfaced closely with AEP purchasing personnel early in the project to define and procure all electrical equipment and components to ensure expedited fabrication and timely delivery for the upcoming U1 outage (September 2006). Performed extensive query of AEP’s system wide equipment/component material database for procurement of stock items (as required).<
  • Core participant in the drawing preparation effort (over 1,000 drawings) for the new EHC systems. Performed extensive markup of existing plant drawings (elementaries, schematics, flow, logic, pneumatic) to reflect the planned demolition of systems and components associated with the existing turbine electro-hydraulic control systems.
  • Reviewed & approved vendor documentation: equipment drawings (elementary, wiring, one lines, and construction drawings), equipment technical documentation (specifications, datasheets, test reports).
  • Performed technical analysis of modification documents and vendor correspondence; formulated design changes to resolve emerging problems and conflicts with ongoing modification work activities.
  • Prepared new plant drawings for new electrical equipment (one lines, schematics, wiring, phasing, synchronizing, assembly & details, front views).
  • Performed various analyses (4.16kV, 600Vac, 250Vdc) for the new equipment: Load flow, Ampacity, Voltage drop, Short circuit, Overcurrent Protection & Coordination.
  • Sized and selected medium to low voltage power distribution transformers, low voltage switchgear, MCCs, protective devices (solid state protective relays, circuit breakers, power and control fuses, combination starters, overload heaters), power and control cables.
  • Performed new protective relaying calculations: ground overcurrent (50G), phase instantaneous & time overcurrent (50/51), ground detection (64), differential protection (87), breaker solid state trip devices (phase 50/51). Revised existing calculations.
